Fishermen, residents, and other harbor stakeholders are invited to meet at the Peninsula School cafeteria at 1 PM on Saturday, November 15, to discuss potential improvements in Prospect Harbor, Bunkers Harbor, and South Gouldsboro Harbor. Gouldsboro plans to invest in the town’s harbor infrastructure in 2026. The goal of this meeting is to gather viewpoints and advice that will shape the town’s actions.
This is the second meeting in a year-long planning effort funded under an award to the Maine Coastal Program from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In May of this year, thirty-two people, most of them fishermen, participated in the first meeting where they identified the following priorities for each harbor:
- Prospect Harbor: Add a town ramp to enable fishermen to haul their boats in advance of large storms.
- Bunkers Harbor: Reorient the current town ramp to make room for a town float.
- South Gouldsboro Harbor: Repair or rebuild the town jetty that has been severely eroded by storms so that it can be reopened and used for loading and unloading.
Over the summer, FB Environmental and the Coastal Resilience Committee examined each of these priorities, identifying options, questions, and additional needed information for each one. During this second meeting, participants will explore the options and work toward answering the questions.
To help move this proposed work from concept to reality, Gouldsboro submitted a proposal in August that, if funded, will provide the necessary funding to hire surveyors, engineers, and environmental permitting specialists to gather the required information and conduct the design work necessary to prepare for construction. The knowledge and preferences gathered at this second meeting will shape the focus of that information collection and design work.
